BEFORE USE

Read carefully the following recommendations to safely use epoxy resins.

Always follow these 3 steps before starting to use epoxy resins:

  1. Check the hazard pictograms and the safety datasheet on the containers
  2. Store the containers properly
  3. Prepare the setting before handling epoxy resins

1. Check the hazard pictograms and the safety datasheet

Any dangerous property of a chemical product has to be labelled on the container. Be aware of the related hazard classes and safety information.

Please note that the main hazardous properties of epoxy resins in their uncured form are irritating / corroding and sensitizing effects when in contact with the skin or mucous membranes (eyes, ears, nose, mouth).

Many epoxy resins are also labelled as hazardous to the environment.

2. Store  properly

  • Clearly label containers that contain, or have contained, epoxy curing agents or contaminated waste, including containers for rags, contaminated clothing, utensils, etc.
  • Store in a cool and dry place, away from potential sources of ignition before and after use.
  • Make sure the containers are always tightly sealed and use equipment as described in the legislation, for instance, retention traps.

3. Prepare the setting before handling epoxy resins

  • Make sure you are in a ventilated area, which effectively prevents the accumulation of vapors.
  • For solvent-containing systems and certain methods of application like spraying, good ventilation is required to prevent respiration of vapours or spray. Open the windows and use a fan if possible. If required, use respiratory protection.
  • If possible, avoid working in a dusty environment.
  • Ensure that all contaminated tools and equipment are correctly stored, disposed of, or washed to avoid contact.
  • Do not smoke, eat, drink, or store foodstuffs where curing agents are handled, stored, or processed.

Areas in which epoxy resins are used should be equipped with:

  • An eye bath in the immediate vicinity of use
  • A safety shower
  • A fire extinguisher for flammable systems
  • Paper towels and soap

Have you memorised everything?

Take the practice test!
