USE

Please follow the below guidelines for handling epoxy systems safely.

1. Transport and storage

2. Metering

3. Mixing

4. Spreading the material

1. TRANSPORT AND STORAGE

  • Always follow the applicable laws and guidelines provided by the supplier for transporting and storing epoxy systems’ components.
  • Please carefully review Section 7 of the Safety Datasheet provided by your supplier.
  • The components should always be stored in sealed containers in a cool and dry place, designated as a material storage area.
  • Storage must be set up so that any damage or leaking of containers is visible immediately.
  • Do not store the containers in restrooms, or in temporary accommodation on the building site.

Please refer to the Before Use and PPE sections in the app for information on suitable protective gear and safety measures to be taken prior to beginning the application process.

2. METERING

When mixing the epoxy resins please bear the following safety guidelines in mind:

  • Strictly follow the guidelines in Sections 7 and 8 of the Safety Data Sheet provided by your supplier.
  • Wear appropriate protective clothing and gloves to protect yourself from skin contact during all the steps of working with Epoxy resins (PPE).
  • Avoid any contact with the components before mixing.
  • Always use separate metering devices for each component of the uncured resin system to avoid starting the curing reaction prematurely.
  • The ready-to-use combination packages come with the optimal dosage of components with the correct resin/hardener ratio. If the application of such systems is not possible, the use of technical metering and mixing systems, such as drum pumps with a flow meter, a large container with taps and flow meter, or a drum tipper, is advisable.
  • While producers define mixing ratio by volume, occasionally, metering by weight still needs to be done. In such cases remember to weigh each component separately prior to mixing.

3. MIXING

  • Be extremely careful while mixing and take extra care to avoid any spillage.
  • Only use specially designed equipment for mixing to reduce incidences of potential exposure due to unintended splashing or spilling. You could use the following equipment for mixing:
    • Mixers with variable speed control.
    • Mixing tools suggested in the manufacturer's user guide.
    • Protective lid with a hole for the mixer.
    • Mixing stations for large batches.
    • Forced action mixer.
    • Static mixer especially created for crack injection: tube with helix inside to provide intense mixing of liquids.
    • Ensure that mixing takes place in a well-ventilated area.

4. SPREADING THE MATERIAL

  • Always use suitable pail carriers to pour the uncured liquid epoxy system onto the floor and spread it safely.
  • Work carefully when applying the liquid system and always protect arms and legs with suitable protective gear.
  • Maintain ample distance during application to minimise the risk of skin contact.
  • Always use a splash protector.

The processing of epoxy systems can be made safer by following a few simple measures.

4.1. FOR SCRAPING, ROLLING, BRUSHING, AND SPRAYING APPLICATIONS

  • Always use two-component metering and mixing equipment.
  • Use a scraper and not a palette knife.
  • Whenever possible, use a roller with a splash protector.
  • For spray application make sure the place has good ventilation.
  • For solvent-containing systems, further measures might be needed. Supplier information as well as legislation and information on fire and explosion protection have to be taken into account.

4.2. FOR INJECTION APPLICATION

  • Use two-component metering and mixing equipment.
  • Always use suitable high-pressure joints and connections.
  • Always conduct a permeability check with compressed air to ensure the correct placement of the injection head.
  • Ensure vent placement at the sealer.
  • Do not squeeze, bend, or drive over hoses.
